Established in 2004

The National Cancer Institute aims to provide medical services of all diversity and complexity for this group of patients struggling with tumors in Libya. It is to alleviate the burden of this disease on patients by providing world-class medical services within the country which is financially supported by community institutions and donors.

The National Cancer Institute – Misrata was established on 09/19/2004. Its opening gave the hope oncology patients in localizing the treatment. The institute was opened with a bed capacity of approximately 120 beds with departments of surgery (men and women) and internal medicine departments (women and men) that were among the first departments to open their doors to patients. Since that time and until now, the institute continues to receive all patients from all regions of Libya and of different nationalities. The institute is not only a transformational institute, but also provides various primary health care services through its outpatient clinics on a daily basis and for a huge number of patients, estimated at 44,495 patients annually.

The institute is considered the locally and nationally leading in the field of diagnosing and treating oncology. It aims to cover medical services for approximately 500,000 citizens. The number of visitors reached 44,495 during the year 2019. The current clinical capacity of the institute is 127 beds distributed among its branches of surgery, internal medicine, pediatric oncology and intensive care unit. The institute also includes several diagnostic departments, the most important of which are diagnostic radiology, tissue laboratory, medical analysis and a hematology laboratory. The number of employees in the institute is 518 employees, distributed over all the medical and administrative departments.

Despite all the obstacles and challenges encountering the institute, the institute’s team of staff believes in the importance of continuous development and the provision of the latest scientific findings in terms of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. A number of departments have been developed during the past few years, the most prominent of which is the Department of Pediatric Oncology (the only nationally), the Department of Therapeutic Radiology, and the nuclear medicine clinic. Believing in the importance of preserving medical data and using it in scientific research, promising developments have been adopted for the institute’s archive and the medical statistics office. The institute is keen to draw up renewable development plans for all departments.

The institute includes expertise and research center to develop the clinical and academic skills of its employees by providing regular lectures and workshops. It also contains a library that provides services in the field of scientific research. It includes a branch of the Arab Medical Specialties Council, through which it works to organize periodic examinations to contribute to the efforts exerted regionally to raise the efficiency of medical services.

The Urology Department is one of the surgical departments within the institute, which is in continues development. Now a many major operations are currently performed by purely Libyan doctors, as it was previously send to performed abroad.

In conclusion, our goal is to extend bridges of trust between doctors and patients and our belief of the importance of the cause that we are fighting for, all efforts join together within the institute to ensure the provision of adequate medical care to all patients without exception.

We look forward to your stay.
